Keep Your Mind Sharp with Our 5-Star-Rated Hearing Restoration Treatment

When you visit our hearing aid centers, we will work with you to restore your hearing, not only to improve your enjoyment of daily life but also to help you offset the psychological dangers that hearing loss can cause. Today, one in twelve Americans suffers from hearing loss, with over two-thirds of Americans over the age of 70 struggling to hear. Because the way we hear is interconnected with our brains to such a strong degree, that means dementia suffered by aging Americans can frequently be linked to the deterioration of their hearing ability. Keep reading to learn about our Oahu, HI, hearing loss and dementia treatment.

How Are Hearing Loss & Dementia Connected?

Dr. Frank Lin and his team at Johns Hopkins Medical Center have published numerous studies on the impact of hearing loss, including its strong link to cognitive decline and dementia. They have found three primary effects of hearing loss that can contribute directly to your risk of dementia.

#1 – Social Isolation

Withdrawal from social situations is common in individuals with hearing loss. If you struggle with any of the following, even to a mild degree, you are not alone:

  • Feelings of embarrassment
  • Fear of making mistakes during a conversation
  • Feeling like you are not part of a group conversation

Proper hearing health care can enable you to maintain an active, engaging lifestyle. In turn, that social interaction helps to keep your mind sharp. Keeping your brain mentally fit – with social interactions, communication, reading, and playing games – is a recipe for a long, healthy life!

#2 – Cerebral Atrophy

Multiple scientific studies have demonstrated that hearing impairment is associated with accelerated brain atrophy in both the overall brain, as well as even more advanced reductions in volume associated with the memory, hearing, speech, and language portions of the brain.

Cerebral atrophy is a hallmark feature of individuals with dementia. A decrease in brain volume is essentially the result of losing millions of neurons. As the auditory system ages, we lose sensory cells in our ears. Each of those cells has the potential to make connections with millions of cells throughout the brain in areas involved with hearing, speech, memory, and beyond. Therefore, losing your hearing with aging can affect much more than your ears!

#3 – Cognitive Overload (i.e., Working Your Brain Too Hard)

Hearing loss is not normal, and neither is the excess strain that it puts on your brain. With hearing loss, your brain is constantly on overload as it works to fill in the missing pieces and follow the conversation. Imagine trying to read this page if every third word were missing. Now imagine reading a 300-page novel written like that! The extra time it takes you to follow what is being said in a conversation can really add up, and this can harm your brain over time.

Came in yesterday for my mother due to an ad invite for a new hearing device and instead got more than we came for, a thorough ear/hearing tests and insurance options expert advice without sales pitch hint. Dr. Wesley Nakamura's patience and knowledge made us feel comfortable and he genuinely wants to help us, putting our best interest first. Neat and clean office with super friendly staff! Too bad Yelp only got 5 stars when I could easily give it a 10! Thank you Wes and the staff !!! Aloha! - Andy andy hearing review in oahu hi
I took a hearing test there and had the best experience ever! Dr. Nakamura is really generous, friendly, and heartwarming. He made sure if I felt comfortable when I am in the small room for the hearing test. He knows well with hearing aids and he fixed feedback of my hearing aid like in 5 minutes. The feedback bothered me for a long time but it got so much better. He speaks Japanese very well, too. I would definitely come back to here if I ever get a problem with my hearing aids. Thank you so much!! - Manae top rated hearing reviews in oahu
